Internships With Wolves
Internships
The mission of the International Wolf Center is to advance
the survival of wolf populations by teaching about wolves,
their relationship to wild lands and the human role in their
future. The home of the International Wolf Center is in Ely,
Minnesota, and is visited by 50,000 to 60,000 visitors each
year. In addition to viewing our resident wolf pack and
exploring our award winning Wolves and Humans Exhibit,
visitors also have the opportunity to explore wolf pack
habitat through our many outdoor naturalist programs.
The Center offers several three month wolf education
internships throughout the year. The three month periods
include March through May, June through August, September
through November, and December through February. A degree
in environmental education or related field, or prior
teaching experience is preferred for the position.
Intern commitment will be 40 hours per week, including time on
weekends and holidays. Interns are required to have a valid
driver's license. Selection criteria includes education,
experience, references and written statements.

The goal of this program is to give interns a strong background
in wolf information and experience in conveying this information
to the public. Interns conduct a variety of indoor and outdoor
wolf and wolf-related education programs. Programs may have as
few as two or as many as 200 participants and vary in length
from 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Summer interns work largely with the general public. Fall,
winter, and spring interns will have the opportunity to work
with visiting school and scout groups, bus tour groups, family
weekends and adult programs. Interns will also contribute to
the programming of the Center through special projects and
support work. Projects are selected based on the talents and
interests of the intern, as well as the current needs of the
Center. Other areas of training include program development,
scheduling of visiting groups, exhibit cleaning and curation,
and possibly time spent in the retail, office and information
departments.
The International Wolf Center provides off-site housing for
interns and a $500 per month stipend. Interns will be
responsible for providing their own transportation between
the International Wolf Center and the off-site intern housing.
Summer and winter interns will share living quarters with other
interns.

Internships and Volunteer Opportunities
Student Internships:
Wolfsong Ranch Foundation is committed to furthering the
educational goals of anyone interested in the fields of
animal behavior, zoology, wildlife biology, ecology,
veterinary medicine, veterinary science, and all related
fields.
Student Internships are offered for periods of one to three
months (longer stays are considered on an individual basis).
Applicants for our internship positions need to be aware of
some very special circumstances at Wolfsong:
1. We have a FIRM no drugs/no alcohol rule at the Ranch.
Any intern using or possessing drugs or alcohol will
be immediately dismissed and a report of the reason
for dismissal will be transmitted to the sponsoring
educational institution.
2. We are in a very rural setting with our nearest
medical facilities 50 miles and one hour away.
Applicants need to be in excellent health with no
medical conditions requiring regular doctor visits.
People on certain kinds of medications would not
find Wolfsong a safe environment due to desert heat,
hard work, and extended hours spent working in
the sun.
3. The Rodeo ranch is an isolated environment in rural
setting. The nearest tiny store is 8 miles away. The
nearest towns with small grocery stores are 45 and
50 miles away. The nearest urban areas are more than
100 miles away. If you are not used to or interested
in an environment that most urban people would
consider wilderness, we are not the placement for you.
Due to a generous gift from Wolfsong member, Jason Lagan,
we are able to offer room, board, and a small personal
expense stipend to our student interns. If you come to
Wolfsong, you will be living in a travel trailer or camper.
You will make your own meals. You will work at least as
hard as we do.
Internship Application
Volunteer Opportunities:
We have three types of volunteer opportunities
available at Wolfsong Ranch:
On-site Volunteers - We have no paid employees.Wolfsong is an
entirely volunteer organization and we
have three full-time on-site volunteer
positions available. If you would like
to live with the animals for a minimum
of one month, you may apply for one of
these positions. Please read the
information in the Internship section
as it all applies to volunteer positions.
Potential live-in volunteers (and couples
are welcome) need to be aware that we
cannot invite people's personal pets to
Wolfsong Ranch and the ranch is not a
safe home environment for young children.
To apply for one of our live-in positions, please contact us:
Phone: (505)-557-2354
E-mail: wolfsong@vtc.net
Outreach and Fund-raising - Wolfsong volunteers are found in many
communities throughout the United States.
These dedicated people host fund-raising
events, provide information and referral
services within their own communities,
disseminate Wolfsong Ranch news and
information, and are available to provide
direct support to the Ranch as needed.
If you would like to work in behalf of Wolfsong and our
animals, please contact us at:
Phone: (505)557-2354
E-mail: wolfsong@vtc.net
Weekend Warriors - Many of our Wolfsong volunteers work full-time
jobs and can only help out on weekends, summer
vacations, or occasional days away from their
jobs. We welcome weekend volunteers. The first
time you come to the Ranch, you will be
introduced to the animals and the work. After
that, you can choose a project which suits your
interests and abilities and return as often as
you are able.
To schedule your first visit to the Ranch, please contact us at:

Wolf Hollow
They currently offer working internships in Wildlife Rehabilitation.
In the future, they hope to offer internships in the education and
research aspects of our work, but these are not available at this time.
An internship at Wolf Hollow provides the opportunity to gain hands-on
experience working with many different wildlife species and to learn
skills such as handling techniques, diets, food preparation and feeding
methods and to assist experienced rehab. staff with treatment procedures.
Their internships are intended to provide on-the-job training in basic
rehab skills, not to teach advanced theory or veterinary techniques.
They hope a working internship will help interns to examine wildlife
career opportunities. In return, they expect to work with enthusiastic,
mature, hard working people who will become an integral part of the
working staff at Wolf Hollow during their internship. Most of their
interns come from biology, wildlife management, veterinary medicine,
veterinary technician or environmental education fields, but they will
consider interns from any background. they believe that a strong interest
in wildlife, enthusiasm and willingness to learn are more important than
academic qualifications.
If you have further questions about internships at Wolf Hollow,
please call (360) 378-5000 and ask for Shona (please keep time
zone differences in mind and call between 9am and 5pm PST) or
send email to saitken@wolfhollowwildlife.org. Closing date for
applications is end of February 2004.
